108 Mile Gravel Road,
Ultra Endurance,
Cycling Event
Join AZ Gravel Rides and the Town of Chino Valley as we host Arizona’s most unique one day cycling event on May 6, 2017. The course is a 108 mile-long out and back from Chino, Arizona to Elk Ridge Ski Area near Williams, Arizona and back through the Prescott and Kaibab National Forests. There is approximately a 60/40 split between gravel and paved roads. Elevations along the course vary from 4000 ft to 7500 ft.
Who can participate in the Chino Grinder?
The Chino Grinder is an event for the experienced and well-trained endurance bicyclist. Although not technical, this is a challenging course with 9700 feet of climbing. If you have not completed a century ride in the past you should consider signing up for the 44 mile course or the relay the first year to be able to gauge your level of fitness. This will be an annual event so you will have the opportunity to try the 106 miles the next year.
What kind of bike will I need?
Almost any type of bicycle can be ridden on gravel roads. You could definitely do it on a roadbike but the skinnier tires would be more prone to flats and the road bike calipers limit mud/debris clearance in case of wet weather (not likely in Arizona but something to consider). A Cyclocross bike would be a good choice, tough enough for the gravel and light for when you hit the pavement. A mountain bike would be the most comfortable but you will pay a price for the weight, especially on the 22 mile climb from the Verde River up to Williams. There are also bikes made specifically for gravel racing.
***Need more info on bike setup for the Chino Grinder. Contact local gravel guru Garrett Topham at Spur Cross Cycles.
What is the course like?
The course is comprised of two county maintained roads. It is an out and back course 108 miles in length. The gravel section varies between smooth hardpack and some areas of washboard, there a number of wash crossings but generally speaking they do not slow you down.
Will the course be marked?
Yes. This website contains a detailed map that you should checkout before the event. Major crossroads will be signed. Aid Stations will be located near the Verde River Bridge (22 miles from start, also the 44 mile turnaround) and at the Elk Ridge Ski Area near Williams (54 miles, also the turnaround). Aid Stations will be stocked with water and refreshments. A SAG vehicle will follow the last rider on the course. (Tip: The restaurant at the Ski Area will be open for this event, bring some cash.)
Five aid stations support riders with water, sports drinks, energy bars and more. Roving mechanic support throughout the ride. All riders free beer (must be 21), event tee shirt, a chance to win fabulous raffle prizes.
* There are also 54 mile, 44 mile, and relay course options.
Antelope hill is just north of Black Canyon City. Excellent place to train on gravel/dirt for the May 6th Chino Grinder p/b Lauf Forks. Another plus is that the Cleator Bar & Yacht Club is located at the bottom of the hill!
